1.Fossils are generally estimated by the relative dating in which fossils and rocks are placed in order from older to younger.
2.by Radiometric dating.which allows the actual ages of certain types of rocks to be estimated.

The age of a fossil could be estimated by the following two methods :

i) RELATIVE DATING : Fossils closer to the surface of earth are more recent than the fossils which are in the deeper layers of the earth

ii) ABSOLUTE DATING : Fossils or piece of fossil containing rock is analysed for the presence of radioactive content (like Carbon i.e. ¹⁴C )
