France first became a republic on the 22nd of September 1792; this was the day that the National Convention abolished the French monarchy, ruled by the Capetian dynasty and various branches of it since 987 AD.
This political decision was taken by France in the wake of the French Revolution taking a anti-monarchist turn, after the Declaration of Pillnitz by the absolutist monarchies of Austria and Prussia, declaring support for King Louis XVI of France. Up until now the revolution had aimed at establishing a constitutional monarchy, like in Britain; and to the average French the upheavals of 1789 were over by 1791; but following the declaration of war against Austria in April 1792 in response to the Declaration of Pillnitz, the more radical anti-monarchists guided the Revolution into a bloodier, more extreme phase.
