French was the official language of Vietnam from the beginning of French colonial rule in the mid-19th century until independence under the Geneva Accords of 1954, and maintained de facto official status in South Vietnam until its collapse in 1975.

The French language has largely disappeared in Vietnam and according to estimates, anywhere from 0.2% to 0.5% of the population of 97 million (2018 est.) can still speak the language. In a speech during an official visit to Vietnam in November 2018, French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe referred to the 600,000 French-language speakers (locuteurs francophones) of Vietnam. [1] The French Embassy estimates are lower. It states that there are approximately 150,000 "actual French speakers" (francophones réels), 200,000 "occasional French speakers" (francophones occasionnels) and 120,000 "French learners" (apprenants) for a total of approximately 470,000 Vietnamese speaking French at various levels of proficiency
