How gas is compressed into liquid in a gas barrel?

It could be a liquid or it could still be a gas depending on the type of gas and the temperature.

For example steam has a triple point at around 700 F. No matter how hard you compress it, if the temperature is above the triple point, it will still be steam, not water. But for the most common temperatures, it will become a liquid.
