In humans, conversion of glucose to fructose should not be confused with conversion of glucose 6-phosphate to fructose 6-phosphate in glycolysis.
Instead, the polyol pathway is used, present mainly in seminal vesicles. Glucose is reduced to sorbitol by aldose reductase in the first step. The second step, catalyzed by sorbitol dehydrogenase, oxidizes sorbitol to fructose.
