Gonds are an ancient tribal caste living in the areas of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

They have their own social, cultural and economic status which has gone through many changes in the last 50 years.

In the last 50 years they have suffered exploitation from the land owners.

Their ancestral lands have been taken away and they have been forced to work as labourers in their own lands.

They have settled down in remote and unproductive areas of the state with no access to education and health facilities.

The Gonds are indigenous people found in Madhya Pradesh, eastern Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Bihar. Their language bears a strong resemblance to Telugu spoken in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and to some Dravidian languages of South India.

Over the decades, they have come to speak Hindi and other languages also. Their population shows an increasing trend. Unemployment and extremist insurgency in their homelands, especially the central region of India, have altered their lives in recent times. At one point of time, they were encouraged by the government to take up arms to fight Naxal menace, which lead to formation of a group called ‘Salwa Judum’.
