Neither. He was a Sudra. In those days (even until 1000 years ago), only Sudras addressed themselves as ‘das’ of xyz. Vaisyas would refer to themselves as either ‘Shresti’ or ‘Gupta’ (occupational). Kshatriyas would refer to themselves as ‘raja’ or ‘verma’. Hanuman constantly referred to himself as das of Sri Rama in Valmiki Ramayana. When Sri Rama approaches him with his hands on one occassion, he also backs away sort of refusing to be touched by Sri Rama as Sri Rama was of a higher caste than him (in those days Sudras hesitated so due to varna respects).
