Former union minister Mani Shankar Aiyar on Thursday said that the United Nations has been a forum for negotiations at international level and this has prevented a third World War.
NOIDA: Former union minister Mani Shankar Aiyar on Thursday said that the United Nations has been a forum for negotiations at international level and this has prevented a third World War.
"International peace and security have therefore been safeguarded on the basis of universally accepted principles,” Aiyar said while speaking in an international conference on the 70th anniversary of the United Nations in Noida.
He said that the world leaders had taken a moral approach by forming the UN to persuade the other sides to voluntarily recognize what was wrong. "It was a political tactic never tried before in history," he said.
He highlighted India's approach to the UN and in leading the peacekeeping force in Gaza, Belgium and Cyprus.
He expressed concerns over the present scenario where the UN is used by India more for bilateral purposes than that of multilateral purposes.
"We have also noticed that many times the main conference at the UN becomes a side show. More attention is given to whom the Prime Minister is meeting on the sidelines of the conference,” he said.
He also said that India’s permanent membership in the UN Security Council is a herculean task and the country should press for this.
The two-day international conference aims to provide a forum to analyze whether the UN has been able to fulfil the expectations and goals for which it was formed and also to provide an enriching and intellectual experience to the participants.
