Hesione is a character from mythology. Her father, Laomedon, the king of Troy had put Hesione in danger due to his actions. The king had been helped by the gods Apollo and Neptune, to safeguard Troy by building a wall around it. However, once the job was done, the king did not bother to repay them for their efforts. As a result, the angry gods sent illness to Troy that made the people suffer. The only way to end this suffering was by offering Hesione as a sacrifice to a sea monster (also sent by the gods). She was to be tied to a rock and left to be eaten by the monster. It was at this point that Hercules stepped in to save her from her tragic end.

Portia draws a comparison between the choice of the caskets and the story of Hesione. There are many similarities. Both Portia and Hesione are in a highly uncomfortable situation. Their future is uncertain. While Hesione faces a sea monster and death, Portia getting married to the wrong sort of person is similar to dying a little everyday. The greatest coincidence is that both the women have been put in precarious situations because of their fathers. They themselves are not at fault. Bassanio being the hero here, can be equated with Hercules.

Thus the legendary incident of Troy where Hesione is tied physically to a rock is parallel to Portia being bound emotionally to her father's casket test. Both the women have to bear whatever the future holds for them.
