R K Narayan has created a sensitive, situational comedy and an amusing story through the story A Horse and Two Goats. The story highlights the conversation between a villager Mani who knows only Tamil and an American who speaks only English.

Once, Mani took his goats to the outskirts of the village for grazing. As the goats were grazing, he rested by the statue of the big clay horse to protect himself from the son. An American came by and they began conversing with each other. In the midst of the conversation, the American notices the horse and is fascinated by it.

He mistook Mani to be the owner of the horse and agreed to pay Rs.100/- for it. All that Mani understood was that the talk was about a monetary transaction. He thought that the American was interested in buying the goats. He gladly sold them to him and went home with the money. The American, on the other hand, was delighted that he got the horse.

Mani’s wife refused to believe that he sold the goats for a hefty price and accused him of stealing the money. Her doubts became stronger when the goats returned home soon after.
