Joe Thompson's selfless act of helping Maggie without expecting anything in return made Maggie very happy. She found a nice and comfortable home which her mother failed to provide. Jane, who at first, did not like the idea of keeping her, later transformed into a mother and could not let go of Maggie. It completely changed Jane's behavior and transformed her from a selfish person to  loving person. This made Joe happy too.
