The cement industry is the fifth-largest contributor to India’s exchequer with INR 105.44 billion in excise in FY15-16. A leading employment provider in the manufacturing sector, it employs about 20,000 people downstream for every million tonnes of cement it produces.

One of the top buyers into the Government’s vision of a green future, the sector is looking at investments of between US$ 29 bn and US$50 bn to achieve the CO2 emission reduction target envisaged for 2050. The Industry has reduced CO2 emission levels by about 36% from 1.12t/t of cement produced in 1996 to 0.719t/t in 2017.

On a par with Japan in terms of energy consumption and adoption of green practices, India’s domestic cement industry has achieved notable results in India’s Bureau of Energy Efficiency’s (BEE) Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme for energy savings. With the PAT cycle 1 energy reduction target, the Industry exceeded the PAT cycle reduction target of 0.815Mtoe by almost 82%, at 1.48Mtoe. It also reported specific electrical energy consumption (SEC) of 80kwh/t of cement compared to a global average of 91kwh/t.

A keen participant in the circular economy, the Industry has improved its use of alternative fuels (AFs) and raw materials (ARM) and enhanced the use of WasteHheat Recovery (WHR) –based power generation.  In the last 2-3 years, the average thermal substitution rate (TSR) has increased from less than 1 percent to 4 percent. It has also adopted renewable energy sources and partly substituted clinker with fly ash and slag.

In addition, the majority of Indian cement plants produce their products with dry-process technology and are part of the zero-waste water industry.

If the Industry works towards stringent decarbonization targets at its current pace, it is expected to achieve CO2 emissions of 0.58t CO2/t of cement by 2020 and 0.35t CO2/t of cement by 2050, according to the Low Carbon Technology Roadmap created by the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) and the World Business Council on Sustainable Development as part of a CMA collaboration initiative.
