1) In India, the heavy industries use huge amount of water for industrial use and thus deplete water resources.

2) Many industries depend on hydroelectricity for the energy consumption of their factories. There is  extensive use of water upstream leading to the river getting dried in the lower stream.

3) Excessive use of ground water leads to depletion of ground water.

4) The industries dump chemical wastes in the water sources like rivers, seas, oceans, etc. thus contaminating the water and endangering human life.

5) The contamination of water also endangers the lives of the plant and animal life.

6) The chemicals seep into the ground contaminating ground water.

The above points denote how the increasing number of industries exert pressure on existing fresh water resources.
