The National Population Policy (NPP) 2000 laid down guidelines for the improvement of health of children and mothers. The major aim of the policy was to achieve achieve replacement levels of fertility by 2010. With this focus, it reoriented the health sector towards reducing infant mortality and maternal mortality rates in the country. There was a major emphasis in the health sector towards making available vaccines for children and providing means of safe delivery of babies for expectant mothers.
