Answer:
Quite simply the internet is a collection of computer networks, both state owned and private using shared protocols to communicate.
Prior to broadband internet connections being widely available the only way for a company with multiple sites to pass large (for those times) amounts of data was via a leased line circuit from a telecommunications carrier. The expense of these put them out of reach to all but large businesses.
These days, it’s possible to have many multiple sites each with a broadband connection to the internet at a small fraction of the cost. Using secure tunnelling, these can be considered one wide network.
