The US had a lot going for it to become the wealthiest nation in the world. First, during the late 19th and early 20th century, mass industrialization allowed the US to become a manufacturing juggernaut. A large population, aided by mass immigration to the US, provided a steady workforce. The US had just about all of the natural resources it needed, unlike many other contemporary powers who needed trade to maintain their resource supplies. The vast US land area gave it all of the materials it needed.

However, it was the world wars that really kicked America into high gear. During both world wars, America made insane amounts of money selling arms to the Allied powers. Also, most of the large European economies (UK, Germany, France, Russia) were devastated by the wars, seriously setting back their economy. This combination vaulted the US farther ahead of the competition, and that gap has yet to be closed.
