According to the rigveda there are 2 groups of people - rajas and brahmins.

The priests perform rituals whereas the rajas rule. The rajas did not have capital cities, palaces or armies nor did they collect taxes. Two words were used to refer to the people or the community as a whole - jana and vish. The people who composed hymns were known as aryas whereas the servants were known as dasas and were the property of their owners.
