The three questions

In the short story and parable ' The three questions' by the world famous Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, the hermit plays a vital role.

The King of a kingdom was in search of the answers to three questions.

These questions were - 'What was the right time to begin something?

Who were the right people he should listen to?

What was the most important thing for him to do? '

None in his kingdom could provide him with satisfactory answers.

So he went to a  hermit living in solitude deep in the forest and sought the answers.

The hermit was a wise man. He listened to all the questions but did not answer verbally.

His unique manner of answering was to maintain silence and let the King find the solutions to his questions himself .

He made the King wait patiently . During this time of waiting many events took place. The King was forced to decide for himself and perform the deeds which he thought was most appropriate.

In this way the King developed his ability to think wisely, perform his duties responsibly and selflessly and to able to make his own decisions.

The hermit's unique way of answering the question not only gave all the answers to the King's questions but also saved his life.

The King helped the hermit by digging the soil for him. When a wounded man came to the hermitage the King served him patiently and recovered him.

The man had come to kill the King but the King's service changed the man's decision. It not only saved the King but he found the answers through his own experience.

This proved the hermit's wisdom in imparting the answers.
