Napoleon rolled out a new civil code in 1804, known as Napoleonic Code, which dismissed all privileges ordained at birth and established equality before law and governance. This code was exported to all regions that were brought under the role of Napoleon in due course of time. This new code brought cheer to peasants, small business men. But nobility and landlords in France and feudal lords and manors in Italy and Switzerland did not receive this code well. Even in towns, guild restrictions were removed. So all people who lost their privilege ordained due to birth or family status were unhappy with the new code. The initial enthusiasm of liberty that French occupation brought to Warsaw, Milan, Brussels and Mainz slowly waned and discontent grew among people of the newly occupied territories.
