India has numerous important coastal cities like Mumbai, Surat and Kochi on the west coast and Kolkata, Chennai and Vizag on the east coast. Climate change will affect coastal cities by causing sea level rise, leading to health problems, affecting economic growth, burdening civic amenities and causing frequent disasters.

1. Several coastal cities are only a few feet above mean sea level and are likely to be submerged due to sea level rise.

2. Climate change will lead to an increase in the incidence of water borne diseases like cholera and diarrhoea.

3. Climate change will affect the ports of major coastal cities thus reducing the income from shipping. Moreover changes in the landscape of coastal cities will reduce the tourism potential.

4. Climate change will burden the stretched civic infrasstructure of coastal cities. Thus it will be more difficult to provide basic civic amenities to the residents.

5. Climate change will lead to more frequent disasters like cyclones, floods and droughts.

Coastal cities must in the future be designed to be resilient to the effects of climate change.
