Water at a height/flowing water is passed through the dam to the blades to move them (Here, the potential energy of the water is converted to kinetic energy by moving the blades). Then, the kinetic energy of the blades is converted to electrical energy by generators.

A dam is a barrier which obstructs the flow of river and create a reservoir which is used for many purposes like generating hydroelectricity.

Dams are generally installed at higher altitudes so that the water falls with more kinetic energy.

water comes to the turbine through a pipe with high kinetic energy. Since energy is always conserved therefore all the kinetic energy gets converted into mechanical energy of turbine which is connected to a generator which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.
