Hydrogen gas can be checked by bringing a lighted match stick near the mouth of the test tube. The gas will burn with a 'pop' sound and the flame will get extinguished.

Oxygen gas can be checked by bringing a lighted splinter near the mouth of the test tube. If the flame becomes brighter, it indicated the presence of oxygen gas.
