Early Vedic period saw transition from nomadic culture to village settled life. This civilization emerged after the decline of the Indus Valley Civilization. The people of this civilization called themselves as Aryans. It was the time when Vedas, Mantras, Hymns were written.

At that time also agriculture was the main occupation of the people. Crops of barley and wheat were produced. Similarly cotton and oil seeds were also grown in fields. But rice was not grown extensively. People of Early Vedic period were aware of use of manure and irrigation system. They also used to plough their lands.

Thus, people of early Vedic period were mainly dependent on agriculture as it was their main source of income.
