A Fuse is connected in series with the circuit.

It is used to prevent shortcircuiting or overloading as it breaks the circuit when current load increases and saves the electronic appliances.

A fuse is made of SOLDER(an alloy of tin and lead). It has a very low melting point.

When huge current comes, heat is produced due to Joule's Law of Heating:

H=I^2 r t, Heat is directly proportional to current, heat increases, Solder melts and circuit breaks hence preventing short circuit.

Answer:

An electric fuse is a safety device which melts and breaks the circuit whenever there is an excess flow of current through the circuit.

The electric fuse is used to limit the current flowing through the circuit.

It is usually made up of an alloy of lead and tin . It works on the heating effect of the electric current .

The purpose of electric fuse :

(i) It prevents the appliance from being damaged .

(ii) It prevents electric fire.

(iii) It saves the life of a person because if a person would have come in contact of the heavy current , then his life would have been in danger.

(iv) It is economical and allows repair of the faulty appliance .

Hope it helps !
