1 Cut the bottom end of the twig straight across to remove any jagged edges. Remove all the leaves but the top two or three. Scrape the outer layer of bark from the bottom 2 or 3 inches of the twig. This is referred to as wounding the cutting and it stimulates root production.

2

Fill a container with coarse sand and saturate the sand with clean water. Allow the sand to drain until it is only slightly moist. Push your index finger into the center of the sand to make a hole for the twig.

3

Pour one teaspoon of a rooting hormone onto a paper plate and dip the wounded end of the twig into the hormone. Shake off any excess and place the twig into the hole you made in the sand. Tamp the sand down around the twig so it stands erect.

4

Slip three bamboo skewers into the sand, evenly spaced along the outer edges of the container. Place the container inside a clear plastic bag and pull the bag up over the skewers and twig. Cup the end of the bag in your hand and blow into it to fill it full of air. Twist the bag closed and seal it with a rubber band or twist-tie.

5

Set the container on a heat mat in a bright location but out of the direct rays of the sun. Open the bag daily to ventilate the twig and check for decay. Mist the twig if the sand appears dry.

6

Check the twig for roots after four weeks. Give the twig a gentle tug and feel for a counteraction. If the twig resists, the roots are forming. Once the twig feels firmly anchored into the sand, remove the plastic bag.

7

Leave the twig in the same spot until you see new growth. Transplant the twig into a container filled with a sterile growing medium. Continue growing the new plant until it has reached a healthy size, generally 12 inches tall or more. Pinch the top of the twig to encourage branching and a bushier growth.
