How is acid rain causing harm to Taj Mahal?

As we know, acid rain is very harmful for buildings. So, when acid rain falls on the white marbles of the Taj Mahal, it damages or destroys the white marbles. This is because the acid reacts and corrodes the marble of The Taj Mahal slowly turning it into yellowish in colour.

  • Burning of coal and diesel releases sulphur dioxide gas. It is an extremely suffocating and corrosive gas.

  • Moreover, petrol engines give off gasesous oxides of nitrogen.

  • Oxides of sulphur and nitrogen dissolve in rain water and form acids.

  • Such rain is called Acid Rain.

  • It is very harmful for crops, buildings and soil.
