Acid rain is formed when  there are acidic components released into the air like the oxides of nitrogen and sulfite combine with moisture in the atmosphere to make nitric and sulfuric acids.  These acids can be carried away far from its origin.  acid rain has brought destruction to thousands of lakes and streams in the United States, Canada, and parts of Europe.

↦ Burning of fossil fuels adds sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere. Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide react with water vapour and produce sulphuric and nitric acid respectively. These acid mix with rainwater and fall as acid rain.
