Hey !
Lets take an example of the Braille alphabets. We have been writing for centuries and reading. But the idea that the blind people can read like normal people was new from something old. This is a new way of making something old.
Again taking the Braille alphabet , the way it is printed is absolutely new but the thing is it is just printing which is old. This is a old way of making something new.
I hope u understand.

An invention might be a new way of making something old as it changes the process of getting the desired end product. Take something as simple as agriculture. Man has been cultivating crops for many millenniums but in the past century has made many machines which achieve the same old goal in new ways, helping him save time and energy and achieve the result in an efficient way. These machines are categorised as inventions.
An invention might also be an old way of making something new as an old process might be used to deliver a different end product. For example gunpowder. It was used by the Chinese to treat skin diseases before finally being used as an essential component of firearms.
