The two principal ways atomic energy is 'formed' are fission and fusion. In the fission process, nuclei of heavy elements like uranium-235 and plutonium-239 are bombarded by neutrons, which causes the nuclei to actually split. This forms nuclei of lighter elements but also gives off a very large amount of energy.........
