Goanese bakers

The Baker is synonymous with a Goan village

Even after the independence of Goa from the Portuguese, the Portuguese bakeries still exist in Goa. The bakers, called 'Pader' a Portuguese-Goanese term is the name given to the bakers.

The paders became a part and parcel of Goan life. They go out twice in a day on a round selling bread and other bakery items.

They have a special dress called Kabai - a single-piece long frock reaching down to the knees.

Whilst they go round they carry a stick that makes a rhythmic jingling sound. The Goans flock to purchase bread from them.

No Goan festival or ritual is complete without the products of the bakery be it their bread, cake or biscuits.

Thus the pader or baker is synonymous with a Goan village.
