  • Biogas is an environmentally-friendly, renewable energy source. Its produced when the breakdown of organic matter(such as food, or animal waste) by microorganism in the absence of oxygen (anaerobic bateria) and is used in energy production.
  • Three steps of biogas production:

The whole biogas-process can be divided into three steps:

                          Hydrolysis,

                          Acidification,

                          Methane formation.

  • Many microorganisms take part in this complex transformation with main role given to 3 types of methane-producing bacteria.
  • Hydrolysis:

The first reaction is liquefaction. Acidogenesis: The products of the hydrolysis are converted into organic acids by acid-forming bacteria.

  • Acidification:

Acid- producing bacteria, involved in the second step, convert the intermediates of fermenting bacteria into acetic acid(CH3COOH) ,hydrogen(H2O) and carbon dioxide(CO2).

These bacteria are facultatively anaerobic and can grow under acid conditions. To produce acetic acid, they need oxygen and carbon.

  • Methane formation:

In the biogas reactor, microbial action begins and the biomass enters a gradual process of fermentation. In practice this means that microbes feed on the organic matter, such as proteins, carbohydrates and lipids and digestion turns these into methane and carbon dioxide.
