Biomass may be used as a fuel in the following two ways :-

• Directly as a fuel - Biomass can be used as a fuel right away. For instance dry wood, dry leaves and dry cattle dung are directly used for heat production.

Biomass contains large proportions of water as moisture - The amount of heat produced per unit biomass mass is small. Therefore biomass is not known to be an effective heat source.

• Indirectly by converting biomass into a fuel - Biomass can also be used to turn it into a fuel which is more useful.

Example :-

Cattle dung can be converted to gobar gas, a more useful fuel.

Wood can turn into charcoal. Charcoal gives more heat, and produces little smoke.
