In the seventeenth century, Bombay was under Portuguese control. It was a group of seven islands. In 1661; after the marriage of Britain’s King Charles II to the Portuguese princess; the control of Bombay passed into British hands. After that, the East India Company shifted its base from Surat to Bombay.

Initially, Bombay was the major outlet for cotton textiles from Gujarat. Later, in the nineteenth century, it became the transit hub for large quantities of raw materials; like cotton and opium.

Gradually, it became an important administrative centre. By the end of the nineteenth century, Bombay became a major industrial centre.

Bombay was the chief harbor of the East India Company and estimated as the principal business capital of India.

The principal factors which made it one of the major industrial centers are as follows;

(i) It was a significant market for cotton textiles.

(ii) In the nineteenth century, the center operated as a harbor through which massive volumes of raw supplies such as cotton and opium was imported.

(iii) With the increase of trade in cloth and opium, large associations of merchants and capitalists, as well as artisans and shopkeepers, came to reside in Bombay. The institution of textile factories led to the overcrowdedness of the city as an important industrial center.
