Carbon-14[1] is a naturally occurring radioisotope.

It is produced mainly on the atmosphere when a Nitrogen-14 is bombarded by a cosmic ray, absorbing a neutron and emitting a proton on this process.

With a half-life of about 6000 years, it is a useful marker for dating living creature for it is considered that the C-12/C-14 ratio is constant on the atmosphere and therefore any living creature maintains this ratio while alive due to the Carbon cycle.

Only after a creature is dead that it stops up taking carbon and therefore the ratio changes due to the decay of C-14 to N-14.
