Answer:

Explanation:

The different ways in which the caste system of India affects marriages is as follows:

a) First, the very existence of the caste system means that there are notions of people whom you can trust and whom you cannot.

In our rural areas and small towns, but sometimes also in larger cities, people live among those similar to them, and this has a substantial caste-basis: Yadavs live within Yadavs, Dalits live among Dalits, Brahmins live among Brahmins etc. Even among Muslims and Christians in India, there exists caste system.

This introduces a culture where you are likely to trust someone from your own caste or sub-caste more than any other person not from your "own" group. After all, it's only people from your own caste or sub-caste whom you have interacted with and are more likely to know, compared to those not from your own group. And you would continue the practice for your children when you become a parent.

b) Attached to the above notion is that one should not marry outside one's own caste at all, for then the child has no caste, and not having a caste is a sin.

Caste is determined at the time of birth itself. If a Brahmin marries a Brahmin, then the child born is also a Brahmin. But if a Brahmin marries a Dalit, what is the caste of the child born? Nothing, as per the rules of caste. And to not have caste within the traditional Indian society, is considered as worse than being a Dalit or tribal. Such a person is outcaste, or out of the caste system, and is supposed to be shunned and boycotted by the entire society.

Nobody would want their children to be boycotted by the entire society. Moreover, if they support their children for inter-caste marriage, then they themselves may be boycotted at the very least, and at the very highest, violence may be inflicted against them for having violated rules the entire society subscribes to.

c) Associated with the above two ideas are about who is "high" and who is "low" in society.

In close similarity with the Varna system, the caste system differentiates among people of various castes, ranking them in an order of who is "higher" and who is "lower". So a Brahmin is "higher" as per the caste system, while a Dalit is "lower" and tribal is the "lowest".

If you are of "higher" caste and decide to marry someone of "lower" caste, those belonging to your case oppose it as they feel that this will lead to a "pollution" of their caste men and women. This happens in both types of cases possible as described below.

If you are a guy and marry a girl of "lower" caste, since the girl comes to your home to live with you as per the traditional Indian custom, then the girl is supposed to be "polluting" with her presence the place your family is living in. She will be cooking for your family members or doing other chores, which is also not what is allowed. And hence, it is abhorred.

Contrastingly, if you are a guy of "lower" caste and marry a girl of "higher" caste, then because of patriarchy as the system followed in most parts of India where a girl's honor is linked to that of family, it is believed that the girl's act of marrying you has stripped off the honor of not just your family but of her caste as well, and that honor can only be returned by nullifying your marriage at whatever cost, even if it means killing you two (honour killing) or killing not just you both but your parents and her parents.

If these killings don't happen, at the very least, the family of the girl would be asked to leave the village or their current place of residence by other caste people living around them or boycott them. The worst case is of organizing violence against them.

So either out of the fear of "pollution", social boycott or even death, as well as fear of choosing an "uncertain future", caste system makes it more likely to choose someone from your own caste or sub-caste.
