The word Caste is derived from the Portuguese word 'casta' which means group.

In India, caste of an individual is based on the occupation his family and ancestors have been engaged into since times immemorial.

There are several theories about caste but the most prevailed theory is the divine theory of caste origin which tells that Castes in India originated from different body parts of Lord Brahma.

Head for the Brahmans because they have all the knowledge about Vedas and Shastras.

Region above Abdomen includin the hands for the Kshatriyas or the Warriors because the stregth of their hands is much more as compared to other people.

The region above the knees and below the abdomen for the Vaishyas or the Businessmen as we call them today because they mainly work while sitting.

The lower most region that is the legs is for the Shudras or the lowest caste in the Caste Hierarchy because they perform all the manual and the basic work without which the needs of the upper class can't be fulfilled.

In socities other than Indian caste system isn't the same because people are not discriminated on the basis of their workmanship in the outer world. Everyone is considered equal as the thinking is that no part of the society can work well without the other just like our body is incomplete without a ligament or organ.
