DVD, short for Digital Versatile Disc, is also an optical medium to store digital data. A standard DVD can hold 4.7 GB of data. So DVD is widely used to store large files like video and movies. The capacity is the biggest difference between CD and DVD.

A CD that has a full name of compact disc gets known as a device used to store data in moderate amounts and now overtaken by other technologies. A DVD that has a full name of digital video disc becomes known as a device currently used to store data in large amounts and accepts high definition material.
