Character is what you do in Life, your KARMA. It is the SET of Qualities(now scientifically defined) which guarantees a Good ,Happy Life.
It is not what Life throws at you. It is what YOU with Life. That means, whatever your Mother, Father, sister, brother, friend, boyfriend, girlfriend, teacher,etc did to you. Character how did you RESPONDED. What was your KARMA in response to these Stimulus?
Construction of a building is for a purpose eg to live safe and well.
Similarly, Constructing Life is about Constructing Our RESPONSES to situations.
These are otherwise known as Qualities aka VIRTUE and Character Strengths in Scientific literature.
So, building a Good Happy Life is to be able to show QUALITIES in ANY sort of situation. If you need 'plaster' now and you don't have it, your Kitchen cannot go on being built. That's like comparable to COURAGE. If you don't have Courage to listen to your HEART, then you will not end up in situations, people, etc with which you can grow your Life.
Similarly, if you need qualities of LOVE and Kindness in your relationship and you just don't have them then you might get a House but not a home. Or you might have people but not CLOSE and Supportive to you...
I think you get the point. Constructing Life is about showing QUALITIES in ANY situation which cause Joy and fulfillment. If you don't have these Qualities eg Kindness, Love or Leadership,etc then you don't have the ingredients.
And these very ingredients are a part of a lager set of qualities called CHARACTER.
