During Mieosis,(hope u know what that is!) the number of chromosomes in the germ cells reduces to half, i.e. they become haploid. When two gametes fuse, the half and half become complete, thus restoring the number of chromosomes in the zygote.

Number of chromosomes present in both male and female are 46 or 23 pairs. During meiosis , the number of chromosomes in each germ cell or gamete is reduced to half i.e 23. During fertilisation or the fusion of male and female gametes, the 23 chromosomes from each parent combine to give 46 chromosomes in the zygote. Thus the chromosome number is restored in the zygote
