Opening and closure of the stomata is controlled by changes in the turgor pressure of the two guard cells. The turgor pressure is maintained by movements of large quantities of ions and sugars into and out of the guard cells

The opening and closing of the pore is a function of the guard cells. The guard cells swell when water flows into them, causing the stomatal pore to open. Simillarly the pore closes if the guard cells shrink
