Coke is a fuel with few impurities and a high carbon content, usually made from coal. It is the solid carbonaceous material derived from destructive distillation of low-ash, low-sulfur bituminous coal. Cokes made from coalare grey, hard, and porous.

  • How coke is obtained? Coke is produced by heating coal at very high temperatures for major that is for long period of time.
  • The heating process here is called as Thermal distillation. It is also known as Pyrolysis.
  • For getting coke, coal is usually thermally distilled for 15 to18 hours but sometime the process can also take up to 35 to 36 hours.
  • Coke is also obtained by destructive distillation of charcoal or coal in the furnace.
  • There are mainly two uses of coke- Coke is used as the domestic fuel, coke is also used to reduce the agent in metallurgical process, it is also used in producing fuel gases.
