Answer:

What is the formula of colloidal solution?

Osmotic Pressure: The osmotic pressure of the colloidal particles is described by the Van't Hoff Equation, π = cRT, where π is the osmotic pressure, c is the concentration of the solute in the system, R is the universal gas constant and T is the temperature.

How are colloids prepared?

Dispersion of large particles or droplets to the colloidal dimensions by milling, spraying, or application of shear (e.g. shaking, mixing, or high shear mixing). ... Condensation of small dissolved molecules into larger colloidal particles by precipitation, condensation, or redox reactions

Answer:

i) Double decomposition

An Arsenic sulphide Sol is prepared by passing a slowstream of hydrogen sulphide gas through a cold solution of arsenious oxide. This is continued till the yellow colour of sol attains maximum intensity.

As2 O3  +3H2 S→ yellow   As2 S3  +3H2 O

Excess hydrogen sulphide is removed by passing in a stream of hydrogen.

ii) Oxidation : A colloidal solution of sulphur is obtained by passing H2 S into solution of sulphur dioxide.

2H2 S+SO2 →2H2 O+3S

iii) Reduction : Silver.sols and gold sols can be obtained by treating dilute solution of silver or gold chloride with organic reducing agents like tannic acid or formaldehyde.

AgNO3 →tannicacid→AgSol

AgCul3 →tannicacid→AuSol

iv) Hydrolysis : Colloidal solutions of the hydroxides of FelCr, Al etc, can be prepared by hydrolysis of their salts. A colloida solution of ferric hydroxide, is obtained by boiling a dilute solution of ferric chloride.

FeCl3   +  3H2 O→  redsol   Fe(OH)  3  +3HCl
