There are salt mines, but people also obtain table salt from evaporating seawater. Raw salt from evaporated seawater is sold as "sea salt." Salt from either source, though, is usually refined by dissolving it in water, treating to to precipitate out magnesium and calcium ions, and then recrystallizing it.
