By 'communalism', we mean the opposition of religious communities to each other.
Yes , communalism can cause hindrance in the functioning of democarcy for the following reasons:
1.Democracy is based on law of equality. but communalism favours some group of people which violates the rule of law of equality.
2.healthy democratic ruling cannot be practiced as some people cannot express their feelings, votes on their wish without any fear.
3. For healthy democratic country , we need peace and harmony where as communalism spreads religious riots and leads to violence.

1. Communalism leads to the belief that people belonging to different religions cannot live as equal citizens within one nation. Either, one of them has to dominate the rest or they have to form different nations.
2. Any attempt to bring all followers of one religion together in a context other than religion is bound to suppress many voices within that community.
