Copper is obtained by smelting process from its ore in which its ores are heated in the furnace and then impure copper obtained are purified via reduction and electrolysis.
The most common extraction is from its sulphide ores like chalcopyrites CuFeS2 and Copper(II) sulphide (CuS) via roasting in presence of enrich oxygen and flash smelting as:
CuS + O2 --heat--> Cu + SO2
Now this, copper undergo electrolysis for purification as:
In electrolysis the negative electrode (–) is called the cathode and attracts positive ions or cations e.g. Cu+2 , and the positive electrode (+) is called the anode and attracts negative ions or anions. However in this case, the copper anode actually dissolves.
Oxidation at anode:
Cu (s)--> Cu+2 (aq.)+2e-
Reduction at cathode :
Cu+2 (aq.)+2e- --> Cu (s)
