Corrosion :---- Type of oxidation

Rust :---- A part of corrosion

Difference :-

  • Corrosion can occur when the substance is exposed to air or some chemicals.
  • Rusting occurs when a metal is exposed to air and moisture.
  • Corrosion leds to the formation of the oxides of metal or salts.
  • During rusting, only iron oxide is formed.
  • Corrosion occurs on different surfaces like skin, wood etc.
  • Rust occurs only on metals.
  • Rust can be brownish in color
  • Corrosion can be observed as burns etc..

These are the differences :-

1. Corrosion can occur when the substance is exposed to air or some chemicals whereas rusting occurs when a metal is exposed to air and moisture.

2. Corrosion leds to the formation of the oxides of metal or salts but during rusting, only iron oxide is formed.

3. Corrosion occurs on different surfaces like skin, wood etc. but rust occurs only on metals.

4. Rust can be brownish in color but corrosion can be observed as burns etc.
