Dowry is never good. Anywhere. It's a form of prideful, social act done by the man's family, to compensate for the amount they had spent on their son these days. And also an act of showing their grand status in the society. The woman's family fulfills the demand in order to make sure the girl lives happily ever after. On the whole it's a bad practice done to showcase status.
