When electricity is passed through the solution, copper sulphate breaks up into copper and sulphate. The copper is deposited on the electrode connected to the negative terminal (iron nail). But what about the loss of copper in the solution? Well, the copper plates replace the amount of loss copper in the solution. Hence, we can say that we are using the copper plate to electroplate the iron nail!

The materials that are required for this are-
 a beaker
 a battery
 a copper plate
 an iron nail
 Distilled water
 Copper sulphate
 Sand paper
 A few wires

What to do(instructions)

1.In a clean glass beaker pour 250 ml of water.
2.Dissolve 2 teaspoon of copper sulphate to the water and you can also add a few drops of dilute sulphuric acid to speed up the process.
3.Clean the iron nail with sand paper, wash it thoroughly and leave it for drying.
4.Connect the copper plate with the positive terminal and the nail to the negative terminal through the wire.
5.Dip both the electrodes in the copper sulphate solution and observe what happens.

What is happening(the result)-
You will observe that when the electricity passes through the water then copper sulphate breaks into copper and sulphate. A layer copper deposits to the electrode in negative terminal which is the iron nail. And the copper plate takes place of the lost copper in the solution.
