A male has XY gametes while the female has XX gametes. No matter what is the gender of the baby the mother contributes only the X gamete. If the X gamete of the male fusses, then the baby born is a girl. If the Y gamete fusses then the baby born is a boy.

Hence there are 50 % chances to either have a boy or a girl.

Normal sex cells of an individual with 2n set of chromosome contains n set of chromosome.

Example: human (2n) = 46

Ovum/sperm (n) = 23

When ovum and sperm fuses, a zygote with 2 n set of chromosome is formed. Thus the zygote contains 50 percent of genes from ovum and 50 percent of genes from sperm.

Thus the developing progeny have received equal genetic material from male and female parent.
