How is evolution different from progress? Explain with the help of an illustration
Answers
Evolution and
progress usually go hand in hand. (Note the use of the word 'usually').
Darwin's Theory of Evolution states that due to the random occurrences
of genetic mutation in any species' offspring, one offspring may be able
to adapt to the environment better than the others. For example, a
predator whose claws are sharper than its siblings.
This lucky
mutation will give it an increased chance of survival over its siblings
and over time its future generations will dominate and all the predators
with the not-so-sharp claws will become extinct.
The predator species getting sharper claws over the course of its generations is called evolution.
The fact that the sharper claws helped improve its chances of survival makes this evolution a progress. If the mutation had resulted in something totally pointless, like a different eye color, it would be evolution but not progress.
